Let's Talk Trends

Hello everyone!!

     Let's talk about design trends!  How do you feel about them? Do you follow trends for design or fashion according to how you feel and what you love? As for me, I've never followed trends, because trends end, and you're locked in this trend forever or until you can afford to follow the next trend.

     Pantone announced their Color of the Year last week, Mocha Mousse (17-1230) it's a beautiful color; however, it's not a color I would necessarily use in my home design; however, some people and designers will include this color in their designs next year.  I as a designer would ask you how you feel about the color of the year or wait for you to bring it to my attention. If this is something you love, I would incorporate accessories, or even paint. Paint is easy to change and cost effective. I would never incorporate anything permanent that has a higher cost. I suggest if you love this color, incorporate it in other ways as I suggested earlier.  You may tire of the color and want to change your design. If you did your kitchen cabinets in this color and you are over it in a year, that's an expensive change you would have to make in your home. Can you afford another high-cost kitchen design?

     Do you follow fashion trends? I love classic fashion; I purchase classic pieces and add to them with color and other unique pieces of clothing. That will stand the test of time, just like fashion, design recycles itself every 20 years. So, if you remain the same size when you purchased the special pieces of clothing you can wear them again in 20 years. Good Luck ladies and gents. I was taught you purchase quality over quantity! Spend your money on things that will stand the test of time. Black heels, jeans, the little black dress, crisp white shirt, classic pieces. Then add in those extra pieces. 

     I feel the same should be considered in design as well.  A sturdy sofa in a neutral color, light or dark, then build around it. Design is simple if you know how to see the vision you want in your home.  How do you want your friends to feel when they visit your home? Choose a color that makes you feel comfortable in your home, everytime you walk in you feel happy to be in that space. Design trends like hair styles come and go, don't get stcuk with a design trend that you know will fade and become dated over time.
